why this matters to me (because as an African American DJ, when I DJ at predominantly white bars/events (which is often), it seems that some naturally assume that I either have drugs or know where to find them. I have had this happen at the Boatyard Bar, West End Grill (when it was Griffins), Shooters Bar and Grill, and even a corporate Xmas party by a VP and none of these people who ask for drugs are black. To be blunt - it is insulting and I make it known. So, I have been in quite a few places that are not known for "drug activity" and am stereotyped as the drug man - imagine that. To simply assume that it was drugs in this case is in some ways insulting to me because you are stereotyping these people. I have my theories of what may have happened, but I wasn't there and I don't know and I refuse to attack 2 dead men when I have no real information to analyze. If it wasn't drugs, some of you should feel pretty stupid. If it was, I guess you were correct - good job! Steve, everyone has their opinions and I guess that is what this comment section is for. I have no problem with agreeing to disagree. But I must say that sometimes the "common sense" portion of your brain is not always correct. Dialogue like this is needed, for all of us may get a better understanding of each other as a society, whether opinions are changed or not. -- Cori C. - Edgewater, MD)
Yes (Kudos Cori C. While I don't agree with all of your comment, it was refreshing to have a well thought-out and intellegent response as opposed to the childish name calling some less intelligent people choose to post. -- Steven I. - Glen Burnie, MD)
For all of you..... (I have worked at The Traffic Bar and Lounge. I am a computer systems engineer by day and have a small entertainment company as well. First of all, to simply assume that drugs were the reason is totally asinine. We all know what assuming does, don't we? I have DJ'd there on numerous occasions, and yes, there can be an element there that some folks would choose to stereotype and be afraid of because of how they look, but this place is NOT the drug infested haven that some of you are making it - period. I was not there that night, and am personally glad that I wasn't, but I have never been afraid in the bar - I have never seen any conflicts happen there, not one. And yes, the parking lot is FULL on weekends. So maybe, just maybe, they were parked there because it was the only place to park. Could drugs have been the reason? Sure it could, but if this happened at TK Sharky's, or in downtown Annapolis, would the same statements be made by some of you? I would say no. I don't know what happened, and choose not to "stereotype" people just because of how they look, where they were. And that is EXACTLY what some of you choose to do. Let the police do their work and hopefully the truth - whatever "the truth" is, will come out. I hope my grammar was good enough and my response was thought out well enough. -- Cori C. - Edgewater, MD)
Wow Nardica (Wow Ms. Simmons, that was a well thought out, intellegent rebuttal to several valid points that I have made so far. And for your not-so-educated information, it IS Mr. Locke's business to check these guys on case search. That is the beautiful thing about Maryland, once you run afoul of the law your dirty deeds are public knowledge for everyone. If you don't like the public knowing what you do, DON'T BREAK THE LAW. I know many of you have called me heartless, but in actuality I am just a realist. I refuse to jump on this bandwagon most of America is on now where nobody is resposible for their actions or what they do. We talk of those who are less fortunate being forced into this lifestyle, but don't forget they still had a choice to do what they did. And by the way Ms. Simmons, what reference do you have to me "always being on here talking negative about blacks." This would be the first article I have ever commented on, and if you took the time to READ my past posts, you would see I have never made one mention of the subject's race. Pretty obvious by your comment who the ignorant one is here. -- Steven I. - Glen Burnie, MD)
Nardica Simmons (I will do my best to respond to what you are attempting to articulate as interpreting your grammar is a bit of a challenge for me. The Maryland Judiciary Case search website is a publically funded website payed for by Maryland taxpayer dollars. As one of the lucky ones that pay income taxes, it is my right to use that website in an attempt to discern a persons criminal record and past. Seeing as a the recidivsm for individuals committing those types of crimes is roughly 75%, it is a somewhat accurate indicator of the types of activities you might be participating in at 2 a.m. in a parking lot; especially, when the end result is you being killed. Frankly, it is your type of ignorant attitude at turning a blind eye to 'what happens outside your door and mine' that is directly responsible for this. If that were the case, there would be no point for newspapers or televised news, since nothing outside of your house is your business. There very fact that you are posting on a newspaper's article section really contradicts your statement. But even following you proposed principles how would you earn a living or go to the store or do much of anything successfully wearing blinders? I do feel sorry for the families that have to handle this loss but if it were my child, they probably wouldn't have been there in the first place. However, seeing as they were both adults, and at least one of the victims was still on probation for a suspended sentence involving distributing/possession of CDS, that has a lot to say about their actions. If four people, regardless of race, are shot in close proximity to my or your house, that should be both of our business. Would you really like to walk out of your house knowing there was a chance you could be shot? -- Johnathan Locke - Edgewater, MD)
