This 45-minute exercise class is a chair-based class for individuals who suffer with pain from arthritic joints, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and other related conditions. The Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center Inc. and the Northern Arundel Cultural Preservation Society Inc. will present a multi-media exhibition, "Trails, Tracks, Tarmac: Lives of African-Americans in the History and Culture of Northern Anne Arundel County, 1850 to the Present" from Sept. 2008 to Sept. 2009 at the Bates Legacy Center, 1101 Smithville St. The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and by appointment on Sundays. This exhibition traces the history of African-American contributions and collections that proved influential to the development of Northern Anne Arundel County. South County Senior Activity Center has announced its schedule of trips for 2009. Registration kick-off is at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 at the center, 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater. Trips include Walt Disney World, Cypress Gardens, and the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida, a visit to Virginia plantations in Richmond and Fredericksburg, Va., tours of parts of the states of Washington and Oregon, a Royal Caribbean cruise, visits to Branson, Mo. and Memphis and Nashville, Tenn., tours in Canada, and train trips in Colorado. One-day outings will also be offered as well as trips to area and regional musical theater performances. Participants must be members of any one of the county's seven senior activity centers and free membership is open to anyone 55 years and older. The O'Malley Senior Activity Center will sponsor trips in 2009 to an historic winery, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and gambling facilities in Delaware and Charles Town Races and Slots in West Virginia. Seniors can also enjoy a riverboat cruise, Odyssey cruises in Washington, D.C., and an 11-day Caribbean cruise on the Queen Mary 2. Trips to area and regional musical theater performances will also be offered. All trips include transportation, taxes, and gratuities unless otherwise noted. Mystery writer Marcia Talley will be guest speaker at the first Shady Side Rural Heritage Society's winter luncheon series Jan. 14 at the Captain Salem Avery House Museum, 1418 E.W. Shady Side Road in Shady Side. Doors open at 11 a.m. with the program beginning at 11:30, followed by a luncheon of homemade soup, specialty breads, dessert and beverage. Exactly 70 years after the groundbreaking concert, The Brooks Tegler Orchestra Recreates Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert exactly as it was done on that cold and windy Sunday. Writer, broadcaster and producer John Tegler narrates the story of how the concert came to be and what transpired along the way. The music is recreated from the opening number, "Don't Be That Way" to the closing "Sing, Sing, Sing." The only thing you could compare this performance to would be to the original in 1938!

The inn was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and is currently the chapter house for the Ann Arundel Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
